We love highlighting the stories of people who engage in apartment ministry, and one couple we can’t wait for you to meet is Chris and Leslie Arnaca. In the photo above, Chris is the one serving up dinner surrounded by a group of residents.
Here’s more from Chris and Leslie.
1. Tell us about your apartment ministry and the community you serve. The community we serve, Amanda Place Apartments, is located in Chico, California. There are 144 units in our community. We are the only complex amongst the other Creating Caring Communities teams with a playground.
2. What’s one of your favorite things about serving in your apartment community? One of our favorite parts about serving in our community is hearing resident’s stories when we first meet them. From the genesis of the first conversation, we can build our relationship by asking follow-up questions. And then, from there, conversations can be more meaningful because they start to trush us. To be able to walk around our complex and simply say, “Hi, how’s your day going?” means a lot to us.
3. What is one difficult aspect of serving in an apartment ministry? We find it difficult to see residents who we have developed relationships with move away.
4. What’s one fact people may not know about serving in an apartment ministry? As a stay-at-home mom, the Creating Caring Community ministry can sometimes be all consuming. I need to remeber to put myself in check and get away to another playground (when it’s not too hot outside) or go to the mall to let the kid run around (when it’s hot outside). Serving in an apartment community is like street ministry. You go to the people unlike working in a community center where people come to you.
