When considering serving a local apartment community, one person you need to spend time and effort building a relationship with is the property manager. If you don’t live onsite at an apartment community, and you aren’t connected to a resident who lives onsite, the most effective plan is to approach the property manager carefully in advance and obtain their approval. Property managers may be skeptical or even against any kind of ministry activity happening in the apartment community, and if that is the case, it is a closed door for the time being. When you realize that everyone else is new or just looking for connection too, it’s easier to let your guard down, to welcome others into your life, and to be the light that God calls us to be. My husband and I have since moved into a single-family home but try to take what we experienced in our apartment living and apply it to our neighborhood life as much as we can. The world is so divided, and our differences are being thrown back into our faces as though they are things we should fear. Is there something churches and individuals could do to support people engaged in apartment ministry? Tell us what would make your life easier. We do an event almost every week, indefinitely, and sometimes we run out of fresh ideas to keep the events new and exciting. In the past, we’ve had people from church offer to help us with events by providing something they are skilled at or passionate about, like cooking their family’s secret pasta recipe for everyone. We are so appreciative when someone reaches out to do that, it’s a huge blessing to us and the residents.
